Bengaluru, Nov 11 (UiTV) – Kedarnath temple is located in the Kedarnath town of Uttarakhand which lies in the Himalayas. The Kedarnath is also the name of the mountain on which the Kedarnath temple is located. The temple is about 3,583 meters above sea level near the Chorabari Glacier. The Mandakini originates from this glacier. The Kedarnath mountain has snow-capped peaks almost all times. The name Kedarnath is derived from the Sanskrit word “Kedara” and “natha” which means “the lord of the fields.”
Kedarnath temple is ancient located in the Rudra Himalaya range. Built over thousands of years ago with massive stone slabs on a large rectangular platform. The present temple of Kedarnath was built by Adi Shankaracharya, an Indian philosopher. The inner walls of the temple attract with figures of various deities and scenes from mythology. According to some famous saints the Pandavas sought the blessings of Lord Shiva to atone for their sins after the battle in the great epic Mahabharata, Lord Shiva avoided them repeatedly and fleed in the form of a bull to Kedarnath and upon being continuously followed by them he dived into the ground leaving behind his hump on the surface. At the outside door in the form of Nandi Bull which stands as guard.
Kedarnath is counted among the holiest pilgrimages for Hindu devotees. Kedar is another name of Lord Shiva who is believed to be the protector and destroyer in Hindu mythology. The Shrine of Kedarnath is surrounded by the lofty snow-covered mountains in the winter and by grass in the summer. The site of the temple is magnificent at the time of the snowfall.
