Glimpses of Art

Compassionate Glance, Cave 1, Ajanta, Maharashtra, c. 5th century CE. Photograph by Benoy K Behl, 1992.

In this scene — truly one of the great masterpieces of the art of Ajanta – two men look compassionately towards the prince and princess as they depart from the city, having been banished, giving away all that they possess. It is this spirit of caring and compassion which fills the world of the Ajanta paintings.
